Dentures: Getting Used To Them

Dentist Blog

If you are going to be getting a full set of dentures or you have just got them, then you want to be sure are prepared for all that comes with wearing them. If you don't approach things the easy way, then you may find yourself going through unnecessary pain and frustration. Here are some of the tips that you should follow in order to get used to your new dentures in as simple a manner as possible, as well as information on what you can expect:

Expect some discomfort, but not significant pain – If you go into things expecting some discomfort, then you will be properly prepared for your new set of dentures. When you put dentures on your bare gums, the pressure and constant touching will be uncomfortable, but it should not be significantly painful. If you feel areas of extreme hurting, then take your dentures back in to the dentist so they can make adjustments. It's not uncommon for them to have to make some small changes to help the dentures fit exactly how they should. You should expect the awkward feeling of the dentures to last around a few weeks until you get to the point where you end up forgetting you have them.

Expect them to feel a little loose – You may have this vision of putting in dentures and having them fit snuggly right from the start. However, the reality is that your cheeks and tongue will actually do some work to keep them right in place. They will learn how to do this automatically with some time. Once this happens, life with dentures will become much easier. You won't want to use an adhesive on your dentures unless you have been instructed to do so.

Make eating as easy as possible – If you start out trying to eat how you normally do, you are going to be in for an unpleasant surprise. Large bites and certain types of foods will cause you to experience a lot of difficulty. You want to stick to softer foods at first and cut everything into smaller bites. Chew slowly and try to chew equal amounts of food on each side of your mouth. Be extremely careful if you are eating anything with sharp edges, even something that may seem as simple as tortilla chips will take some learning and getting used to.

Practice speaking – Don't expect to put your new dentures in and sound normal when you speak, it will take time to learn how to talk normal with them in. One of the best ways that you can go about learning to speak with the dentures in is to grab a book and read it to yourself out-loud. Pay attention to the words that give you the most trouble, write them down and spend some time each day repeating those words in different sentences. If you feel the dentures clicking while you are speaking, then try speaking more slowly.

Learn how to reposition your dentures – There will be some things you do that will cause the dentures to slip, such as coughing or laughing. You can easily reposition the dentures easily by biting down on them gently and swallowing at the same time.

Understanding Dental Problems

Do you have "bad teeth"? I do. Ever since I was a kid, every checkup turns up a number of issues ranging from cavities to dental fractures. It has always been frustrating to keep my smile in decent shape, which is one of the reasons I started focusing on understanding different dental problems. I wanted to know what I was getting into when I visited the doctor, so I began focusing on learning as much as I could. I wanted to create this blog all about dentistry so that other people could find out what to expect when they head to the dentist. Check it out!
